Dye ink is high color, low UV-resistant variety that offers the widest color depth. UV ink is generally duller in colour but withstands fading from UV rays. Similar in general principle to desktop inkjet printers. Finished prints using dye inks must be laminated to protect them if they are to be used outdoors while prints using UV inks can be used outdoors un-laminated for a limited time. Various materials are available, including canvas, banners, metabolized plastic and cloth. Aquious technology requires that all materials be properly coated to accept and hold the ink. Most banners are now digitally printed on large format inkjet printers which are capable of printing a full color outdoor billboard on a single piece of material.
The most commonly used material is a heavy weight vinyl technically known as PVC. Grommets can also be added in order to facilitate hanging of the banner. Banner hem tapes are also used to protect the lamination of the banner, fasten the hems neatly, and adhere to various surfaces. Large banners (which can be so large that they cover the side of a building) are printed on a special mesh material so that the wind can pass through them.
